North Dakota State Lacrosse Announces 2010-11 Recruiting Class

 

For Immediate Release – North Dakota State Lacrosse

Fargo, ND – The North Dakota State University Lacrosse Head Coach, Zach Bosh has announced the commitment of 14 student-athletes for the 2011 season.

“The goal for this year’s recruiting class was to add overall depth to our team while bringing up the skill level,” said Coach Bosh. “As a coaching staff we feel like we have far exceeded those goals. With the addition of players like Alex Veldhuis, Alex Flock, Max Foley and Kyle Sturgeon we added some real scoring punch.”

This year’s recruiting class has the ability to produce immediate impact players for this upcoming year. These 14 talented incoming freshmen will join a Bison team that only lost two players to graduation from last year’s squad that finished near the top of the UMLL Division 2.

Assistant Head Coach Pederson notes, “We are very excited about adding talent and athleticism to our core of returning players. We will have a nice combination of senior leadership and talented underclassmen that can take our program to the top of the UMLL.”

Here is a closer look at the Incoming Bison class of 2011:

Max Foley (Rochester, MN) Attack/Midfield
Max transferred from NCAA D2 NYIT. He made the Athletic honor roll during his freshman year at NYIT. In High school Max was second in state in assists sophomore and junior year. He was named team captain his senior year. He was named to MN high school all star team in 2009. Max played Hockey and was a team Captain senior year, and was named the Hobey Baker award winner for sportsmanship in 2009. He was also a three year varsity letter winner in football playing Cornerback. “Max has come back from NY with a new understanding of the game. I think he will be able to step in from day one and contribute at a high level,” says Coach Bosh.

Alex Flock (Stillwater, MN) Attack
Alex Scored 58 Points his senior year and lead the team in assists. During his senior year he was named team MVP. He has great vision and ground ball skills. He was named a team Captain as a senior. This year he was named to 1st team all-conference. He played on Minnesota Lax Loons select team in 2009. Alex also was a member of the varsity hockey team. “We first got to see Alex’s skill during his fall visit to NDSU where he participated in one of our practices. We were very impressed with the play making ability and the ground ball skills Alex possessed,” says Coach Pederson.

Alex Veldhuis (Maple Grove, MN) Attack/Midfield
Alex was named a Minnesota Mr Lacrosse finalist in 2010. He was fourth in state in scoring with 66 points including 39 goals and 27 assist’s his senior year. He also was named third team all-state this year along with 1st team all-conference. Maple Grove HS assistant coach Todd Frykman says, “Alex is a complete player with great size and speed. He was a dominant riding attackman on our team.”

Ian Murphy (Robinsdale, MN) Midfield
Ian played on 2009 Lax loons summer select team. He’s a strong all-around midfielder that can play both ways. Ian has a rare combination of athleticism and stick skills. Coach Bosh says this about Ian, “Ian is a standout midfielder that hustles all over the field. He seems to always be around the ball. His skills will translate well to the college game.”

Kyle Sturgeon (Eagan, MN) Attack
Kyle has great vision and the ability to break down his defender. He totaled 12 goals and 24 assists his senior year where he led his team to a 3rd place finish in State. His assist totals ranked near the top in the state. He was named 2nd team all-section. He is playing on the Team Minnesota U19 team that is competing in the world lacrosse festival in Manchester, England this summer. “Kyle is a great feeder that will make his NDSU teammates better. His understanding of the game is far beyond his years,” says NDSU Assistant Coach Tony Ghilani.

Luke Thiele (Eagan, MN) Midfield
Luke is a two sport athlete participating in Lacrosse and Football at Eagan High school. He was primarily used as a defensive midfielder in high school often covering the top opposing Midfielder. “His defense and ground ball skills will help him succeed at the next level,” says Coach Pederson. “We really were focusing on improving our athleticism at midfield and Luke will do that for us.”

Derrik Huisman (Sauk City, WI) Midield/Face-off
Derrik was named his team’s MVP during his junior season. Lead his team in points during his senior season. “Derrik has the size and strength to be a good face-off middie for us and contribute to our team early on,” says Coach Bosh.

Ben Brion (Monticello, MN) Midfield
Ben led his team in scoring his Senior year with 48 points. He was one of the top scoring midfielders in the Minnesota varsity club league. Ben has a strong shot that he has been able to get off whenever he wants. According to Coach Bosh, “Ben’s size and shooting ability will add a dimension to our team that we were looking for. His athleticism will benefit our team greatly.”

Tristan Turner (Stillwater, MN) Defense
Tristan Captained the defense of a team that won the Suburban East Conference. Tristan is an athlete plain and simple. He has the ability to cover the opposing teams number one. As a player Tristan is just scratching the surface of his abilities. Stillwater HS Head Coach Travis Sanders had this to say about Tristan, “You are going to be really impressed with Tristan. He will step in day one and be able to contribute. He is getting better every game.”

Colton Oquist (Monticello, MN) Defense
Colton played defense for Montiquois. They were a top team in Minnesota high school club level. At Montiqouis Colton was a GB leader. He also showed the ability to contribute in the transition game. Colton plays on our summer league team and Coach Ghilani said, “Colton is always around the ball. He is a little raw but the sky is the limit for him. He is eager to learn.”

Uriel Dominguez (Cottage Grove, MN) Defense
Uriel was team captain on the newly formed East Ridge team. He played a year under Zack Greer at East Ridge. Uriel played summer ball for the Eastside Mavericks. He was standout pole on his summer team . He is an athletic pole with a motor that never quits.

Alex Urqaurht (Coon Rapids, MN)LSM
Alex was the Defensive Player of the Year for his high school team. Alex joined us for our recruitment weekend in the fall. We saw something very special there. He is work horse. Coach Bosh had this to say about Alex, “I love this kid’s attitude. He is willing to do whatever it takes to win. You tell him to do something and he going to give you everything he has. One word HEART.”

Alex Johnson (St Louis Park, MN ) Defense
Alex played and important role in his team success in winning the MBSLA state high school championship. His high school coach Kevin Reed had this to say about Alex, “Alex is our starting defensemen but could run LSM, he is fearless. He is a quick defender with a good lacrosse IQ.” We are excited to have Alex and his winning attitude part of our program.

Ben Hardin (Lakeville South, MN) Goalie
Ben is a vocal leader on the field. He played for Lakeville South where he was their defensive leader. Ben saw a lot of shots his senior year and saved a lot of them. In fact he led the state of Minnesota in saves with 180. During the summer Ben played on the Frost Elite team here in Minnesota.
