GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—After falling in the final seconds to No. 4 Dayton on Friday, the Davenport Panthers rebounded in a big way today as they downed No. 5 St. John’s 13-7. The win came via a big second half in which DU outscored St. John’s 5-0.
DU has challenged itself with numerous games against the top teams in the country and Sunday was no different as they welcomed St. John’s to their turf field. The Panthers led by one at halftime (8-7) and then, behind their stellar defense, outscored their opponent 5-0 in the second half to win 13-7.
Davenport started the game out strong as it scored the first two goals in the first five minutes behind Oliver Wade (Burlington, Ontario) and Sam Carlson (Grand Rapids, Mich.).
After SJU scored two of its own, the two teams would manage to trade goals over the final 5:32 to keep the score tied at 3-3 after one quarter.
St. John’s struck first in the second quarter, but it would be the Johnnies’ only lead of the game as the Panthers came right back with two straight goals from Tadas Anuzis (Lansing, Mich.) and Wade.
The offense was put on full display in the second quarter and after SJU tied the game with 11:10 to play, DU ran off the next two behind Gavin Morris (Rockford, Mich.) and Sean Beer (Aurora, Ontario). Beer would later add his second of the quarter to give the Panthers an 8-7 lead at the break.
Head coach Bob Clarkson made a few adjustments in the locker room and the defense came out with a huge second half as it shut out the fifth-ranked team in the country. Davenport got five goals of its own as Morris added three more for his game high four on the game.
DU improves to 7-1 overall is now 5-1 against teams ranked higher than No. 19. The Panthers will take on Pittsburgh March 20 before traveling to Saginaw, Mich. for a conference game against the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley March 27. The next home game for DU will be April 1 against Calvin.
