Colorado Survives Late Flurry from Lindenwood

News Release—Colorado University Lacrosse

March 14, 2010

BOULDER, Colo.—Friday night’s game between the University of Colorado and Lindenwood University was a shining example of the phrase “It ain’t over til it’s over.” With less than two minutes to play in the game, the Buffaloes had a four-goal lead, but ended up only by one at the final buzzer. The final score was 10-9.

Andrew Peterson opened up the scoring for the Lions early in the first quarter, helping Lindenwood establish a three-goal lead entering the second quarter and outshooting Colorado by a two to one ratio. Peterson would go on to add another goal late in the fourth quarter.

Colorado would begin its comeback in the waning minutes of the second quarter thanks to Darren Hulick and Doug Lilburne, who both scored twice in the contest. Defensively, the Buffs held the Lions’ offense to just four shots in the second quarter while only letting in one goal. The CU offense also added two tallies to levy the gap to two (5-3 in favor of the Lions) going into halftime.

Minus a man up goal by Lindenwood early in the third, the Buffaloes had all the momentum, scoring five goals to take the lead and outshooting the Lions 17-6.

CU would add two more unanswered goals, and with time on its side, Colorado looked like it was going to walk away with a win—until the final two minutes came. At the 1:32 mark came the first goal by Lindenwood’s Gregory Cameron, only to be answered seconds later by attackman Tyler Davis. Peterson then responded for his second score of the night with under 10 seconds to play in the game. It was only after a desperation shot that sailed wide right at the end when Colorado could exhale from the fear of losing a late four-goal lead.

The win moves Colorado above the .500 mark with a 2-1 record for the season, good for fifth in the RMLC. Lindenwood, meanwhile, falls to 4-4, but remains third in the GRLC behind Indiana and Illinois.

Colorado’s game scheduled against the Miami Hurricanes was canceled early Saturday morning due to complications. The game has yet to be rescheduled and appears doubtful it will be made up. Miami’s game against Lindenwood, however, is still scheduled to be played Sunday afternoon.
