Coast Guard Announces 2010 Team Captains
NEW LONDON, Conn.– The Coast Guard Academy men’s lacrosse coach, LCDR Brian Krautler, announced today that two players have been selected to serve as team captains for the Bears’ upcoming 2010 season.
Cadet 1/c Andrew Cinque (Cross River, NY/John Jay HS) and Cadet 2/c Greg Bernstein (Baltimore/The McDonogh School) were selected by the coaching staff and a vote by their teammates to serve as team captains for the 2010 season. This will be the first time either has served as a team captain.
“Both Andrew and Greg are great leaders,” said head coach Brian Krautler. “They have the team’s respect not only because of the quality of their play, but because of the great commitment and work ethic they have shown over the years. While we have a large and experienced group of 1/c cadets, we also have a number of younger players who will play prominent roles for us in 2010,” Krautler noted. “The leadership our two captains provide will be essential to the growth and success of our team this year and our staff could not be more pleased with the selection of these young men as our team captains. Each possesses the character, integrity and work ethic we look for and value in our players and I’m certain they will do an excellent job leading our team and representing our program and the Coast Guard Academy.”
Cinque, a short-stick middie, saw action in 10 contests last season and registered four goals while collecting 10 ground balls. A tough player who brings a physical presence to the defensive end of the field, Cinque has also become a vital component of the Bears’ faceoff game. He completed his 2009 summer training program in St. Petersburg, Fla., where he sailed aboard the 110-foot patrol boat USCGC OCRACOKE, flew on MH-60J helicopters and stood duty as a Search and Rescue (SAR) Controller in the Sector Command Center. He is a management major and served on the Regimental Staff.
Bernstein, who was also elected team president, has been an integral part of the Bears’ defense for the last two years. He garnered first team Pioneer Collegiate Lacrosse League (PCLL) honors last season and finished with 33 ground balls in 10 games. He spent his summer training period in New London as a member of the Academy Introduction Mission (AIM) staff. AIM is a summer program that gives high school juniors the chance to experience Academy life before making the decision to attend. He is a government/international relations major and is currently serving on the Hotel Company staff.
