SANDY, UT (October 16, 2009) – Simon Fraser opened their 2009 fall schedule with a 9-2 win over Utah. Both teams worked in their entire rosters in front of approximately 200 fans at the Waterford School in Sandy, Utah.
The SFU defense started the game strong, holding off a long opening possession by the Utes, before Clan freshmen Colton Dow (Port Moody, BC / Heritage Woods) opened the scoring on an unsettled play in front of the Utah goal. Senior Adam Foss (Cochrane, AB / Cochrane) would make the score 2-0 on a feed from Russel Thomas (Nanoose Bay, BC / Ballenas). Thomas would then feed Dow on an SFU fast break to close out the first quarter and put the Clan on top 3-0.
Utah would strike first in the second quarter, converting an outside shot to capitalize on a broken Clan ride. Fraser was quick to answer back with junior Bryan Scott (Guelph, ON / John F. Ross) finishing a nice feed on a drive from freshman Josh Simons (Port Moody, BC / Dr. Charles Best). Foss would then score his second of the game for a halftime score of 5-1.
Foss would continue to lead the Fraser attack in the second half, scoring unassisted on the man-down and then converting his fourth goal of the game on a feed from junior Chris Tessarolo (New Westminster, BC / New Westminster). Utah would generate several quality scoring opportunities in the third quarter leading to their second goal of the game and cutting the Clan lead to five at 7-2.
SFU would hold the Utes scoreless in the fourth quarter with Foss assisting on goals by freshmen Stu Mills (Campbell River, BC / Timberline) and senior Thomas for a final score of 9-2.

QUOTES
SFU Co-Head Coach Brent Hoskins
On Utah: “Utah has added some good players to their returning core and Coach Morris continues to build a quality program. Both teams looked a little rusty as expected but I think that Utah may surprise some teams in 2010 as Coach Kladis has more time to work with some new offensive threats.”
SFU Co-Head Coach Jeff Cathrea
On Simon Fraser: “With lots of new faces in the line-up we are happy with the way our group competed today. Our defense played steady throughout and it was a great opportunity to see some new combinations on offense.”

PROVO, UT (October 17, 2009) – Simon Fraser played their second scrimmage of the 2009 fall season on Saturday, falling 17-9 to Brigham Young in front of approximately 300 fans on a sunny day in Provo, Utah.
The Clan would win possession off of the opening face-off but a forced shot would quickly turn the ball over to the hungry Cougars. BYU would go on to dominate the first quarter, firing 6 unanswered goals and controlling possession through patient offensive sets and strong play at the face-off x.
Looking to establish some rhythm, Fraser came out hard to start the second quarter and began to settle the ball down in the offensive end. Senior attack Adam Foss (Cochrane, AB / Cochrane), would again look to lead the Clan charge, beating several Cougar defensemen on a drive around the back of the cage, before firing a shot past the BYU keeper to finally get SFU on the board. Fraser would continue to chip away at the Cougar lead on goals by freshmen Eric Dufresne (Surrey, BC / Ecole Gabrielle-Roy) and junior Bryan Scott (Guelph, ON / John F. Ross). After a tough opening 15 minutes, the Clan defense also respond well, holding BYU scoreless until the final minute of the second quarter…with only 20 seconds left, senior Elliot Grow (Salt Lake City, UT / Highland) would take the ball himself off of a BYU time-out, and convert on a drive from the side of the net to give the Cougars a 7-3 advantage at the half.
Junior Dean Stewart (Duncan, BC / Claremont) went the opening half in goal for SFU making 7 saves.
Fraser would strike first again to start the third quarter with senior Russel Thomas (Nanoose Bay, BC / Ballenas) scoring off a fast break feed from sophomore Ryan Hodge (San Antonio, TX / Texas Military Institute) to close the Cougar lead to 3. BYU would answer back before junior Chris Tessarolo (New Westminster, BC / New Westminster) made the score 8-5 on a Clan man-up. With both teams now playing with intensity, BYU would re-extend their lead to 5 on back-to-back goals before Clan freshmen Colton Dow (Port Moody, BC / Heritage Woods) and Stu Mills (Campbell River, BC / Timberline) continued their impressive play with consecutive goals of their own to make the score 10-7 BYU. Trying to hold-off the Fraser attack, the Cougars would score again to close out the third quarter and hold on to a 4 goal lead with a score of 11-7.
Senior Mike Ripley (Saskatoon, SK / E.D. Feehan) played the third quarter in goal for the Clan making 2 saves.
Still looking for the comeback, sophomore Rick Bezuidenhout (Campbell River, BC / Timberline) would score his first of the game off of a BYU give-away to open the fourth quarter. Grow responded for the Cougars before SFU’s Tessarolo again made it a three-goal game at a score of 12-9. That would be as close as Fraser would get as a return to sloppy play would allow BYU to pull away the rest of the game with 5 more unanswered goals for a final score of 17-9.
Freshman goaltender Kyle Middleton (Nanaimo, BC / Woodlands) played the final 15 minutes for SFU making 2 saves. Senior Will Hilton (Glenview, IL / Glenbrook South) played all four quarters in goal for Brigham Young.
