Claremont, CA (April 6, 2009) – The Claremont men’s lacrosse team recorded one of the biggest victories in program history with a 12-10 win over nationally ranked UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon. This is the first Claremont victory over the perennial MCLA powerhouse Gauchos since making the move to Division I.

The Cougs, who improved to an overall record of 7-5, battled UCSB to a 7-7 tie at halftime. On the strength of five third-period goals, Claremont continued to dominate the action and never allowed UCSB to regain the lead.

Leading the Cougars individually from the crease was senior goalkeeper Alex Price, who recorded nine saves. His five-save performance in the fourth period was heavily complimented by a strong effort provided by the Claremont defense.

On the offensive side of the game, Claremont played disciplined lacrosse while working hard to not allow the Gauchos, one of the top defensive units in the country, to get into a rhythm. They made smart choices to maintain possession and score against UCSB’s talented and aggressive defense. Seven players scored goals for Claremont making it difficult to focus on stopping any one player.

After the game, Associate Head Coach A.J. Stevens had this to say, “I am very proud of the team today. The coaching staff asked them to learn a new offense as well as adjust to several position changes. They rose to the challenge to earn this win. Our defense was strong and our offense was smart. They kept their heads in the game and never let the intensity die down.”

The Cougars now prepare for Saturday’s road game against divisional opponent UCLA. The next home game is April 18 at 1 p.m. as the Cougars host nationally ranked Loyola Marymount in a game that will have postseason repercussions for both teams.
