Brigham Young University long stick midfielder Britton Cone has been selected as the next CollegeLAX Player of the Week for his role in the Cougars’ home win over Florida. Cone, a junior captain and 2008 1st team MCLA All-American, helped jump start the Cougars’ third quarter comeback by commanding the face-off X after halftime.
“We made the adjustment just to keep him close to the ball,” said BYU defensive coach Matt Schneck, who said the team lost the majority of the faceoff draws early in the game before shifting the responsibility to Cone. “He’s a groundball machine,” said Schneck, who estimated Cone won around 80 percent of his draws in the game.
The Cougars went on to outscore the visiting Gators (ranked #13 in the latest Prodigy MCLA Division 1 Poll) 7-1 in the game’s third quarter en route to a 18-11 victory.
Cone is attributed with 18 face-offs, 9 ground balls and 1 goal on the night, according to the stat sheet from last week’s game in Provo. The Potomac, Maryland native scored a goal in the Cougars’ 2007 National Championship victory over Oregon and was an All-Tournament selection at last year’s MCLA Championships in Texas.
Cone has started for the Cougars since his freshman year, during which time his smooth style of play and athleticism have been employed at both close defense and midfield, said Scheck. “He’s the type of guy that can play anywhere on the field,” he said.
BYU heads to Arizona to face #17 Virginia Tech and the University of Arizona this weekend.
For his selection as a CollegeLAX Player of the Week, Britton will receive a prize pack from CollegeLAX. Be sure to check back next week to see who wins the next CollegeLAX Player of the Week Award and contact CollegeLAX to nominate a deserving MCLA player for next week’s honors.
