GENEVA, NY (August 12, 2008) – Coached by Simon Fraser University men’s lacrosse Co-Head Coaches Brent Hoskins & Jeff Cathrea, the Burnaby Mountain Selects U18 & U15 Summer Elite Teams wrapped up their season by travelling to Geneva, New York to compete at the Hobart College Team Camp.

The Selects combined to post a 9-3 (.750) record against top teams from Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio and Ontario, Canada. The U18 Selects went 5-1 (.833) finishing 2nd in the tournament’s U18 Elite American League while the U15 Selects went 4-2 (.667) to finish 2nd in the U18 National League.

VERSUS OPPONENTS
The Burnaby Mountain Selects combined to outscore their opponents 120-55. In six games, the U18 Selects outscored their opponents 62-27 going undefeated in the tournaments round robin before falling short 9-6 to the Evil Empire (Massachusetts) in the American League Championship Game.

The U15 Selects used 6 games to outscore their opponents 58-28, posting a 4-1 record in the tournaments round robin and suffering a lone loss 4-3 to the Toronto Lancers (Ontario, Canada). Despite the loss, the U15 Selects would still finish as the top seed of the National League to set-up a rematch with the Lancers in the Championship Game. After falling behind early, the Selects would come storming back in the second half of the Final but unable to score in the games final possession would again fall to the Lancers by a single goal margin.

YOUNG GUNS
The Burnaby Mountain U15 Elite team was once again the youngest team entered in the 14-team tournament field with all 16 Selects players having just completed their freshman (grade 9) year of high school.

ALL-STAR HONORS
Forty-Four of the tournament’s top players were selected to play in an All-Star Game. The game took place on Saturday night at H.J. McCooey Memorial Field home field of the Hobart College Statesmen men’s lacrosse team (NCAA Div. I). Six Burnaby Mountain players were selected to compete in the tournament’s showcase event. Representing the U15 Selects were freshmen attack Steve Ferdinandi (New Westminster, BC / New Westminster Secondary) and Anthony Malcom (New Westminster, BC / St. Thomas More Collegiate) while junior attack Mike Kennedy (Surrey, BC / Lord Tweedsmuir Senior Secondary), senior midfield Jaxson Lee (Burnaby, BC / Burnaby North Secondary) junior defender Ryan Zoehner (Coquitlam, BC / Pinetree Secondary) and junior goaltender Kyle Middleton (Nanaimo, BC / Woodlands Secondary) were selected from the Burnaby Mountain U18 Elite team.

EXTRA, EXTRA
In addition to the three days of competition, the Burnaby Mountain Selects also took time to visit Manhattan before returning home including a trip to Ground Zero.

LOOKING FORWARD
Hoskins & Cathrea have announced the expansion to four Elite Teams for the Selects Fall 2008 Season. The Burnaby Mountain Freshman (grade 9) and Sophomore (grade 10) teams will be competing at tournaments in North Carolina and Florida while the Junior (grade 11) and Senior (grade 12) teams will travel to Baltimore and San Diego. The Burnaby Mountain Selects Elite Fall 2008 Rosters will be announced in early September.

ABOUT BURNABY MOUNTIAN SELECTS
The Burnaby Mountain Selects Elite Development Program is entering its fourth season and is part of the Burnaby Mountain Lacrosse Association (BMLA). The program was founded in 2006 by Simon Fraser University men’s lacrosse Co-Head Coaches Brent Hoskins & Jeff Cathrea and is designed to train players in a professional environment to best prepare them for a NCAA or MCLA collegiate field lacrosse career. Selection and consideration into the program is reserved for a select group of elite student-athletes, who possess the desire to work hard and learn in a competitive team environment, while demonstrating the ability to prioritize their academics goals in the highest regards. Players are currently enrolled in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 and train in Greater Vancouver’s Lower Mainland. The Selects, proudly sponsored by Firstar Performance Apparel, Onyx Lacrosse / Riddell Helmets and Gait Lacrosse, travel to compete in top college recruiting tournaments throughout North America.
