COQUITLAM, BC (July 17, 2008) – Hosted by the Burnaby Mountain Lacrosse Association (BMLA), the World Youth Lacrosse Invitational took place July 8-11 as part of the festival activities surrounding the 2008 ILF U19 Men’s Field Lacrosse World Championships in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. Coached by Simon Fraser University men’s lacrosse Co-Head Coaches Brent Hoskins & Jeff Cathrea, the Burnaby Mountain Selects Elite Teams combined to post a record of 11-1 (.917) on route to capturing gold in both the U18 and U15 divisions.
VERSUS OPPONENTS
The Burnaby Mountain Selects combined to outscore their opponents 143-71. In seven games, the U18 Selects outscored their opponents 84-41, posting a 5-1 record in the tournaments round robin and avenging their only loss by defeating Vancouver Island Elite 14-9 in the U18 gold medal game.
The U15 Selects used five games to outscore their opponents 59-30 going undefeated in the tournament after coming from behind late in the fourth quarter to defeat the Australian Kangas 11-10 in the U15 gold medal game.
INTERNATIONAL FIELD
The U18 & U15 Burnaby Mountain Selects represented British Columbia’s Lower Mainland in the twelve team international field with players from thirteen different cities including: Burnaby, Coquitlam, Langley, New Westminster, North Delta, North Vancouver, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Richmond, Surrey, Vancouver and White Rock. Other Canadian teams included BC Island representative, Vancouver Island Elite U18 & U15 teams and Calgary U18 representing the Province of Alberta.
International participants included Mercer Island-Bellevue U18 & U15 (WA, USA) Seattle Starz U18 (WA, USA), Lake Oswego U18 & U15 (OR, USA) and the Australian Kangas U18 & U15 National Development teams.
ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS
Eight Burnaby Mountain players were named to the World Youth All-Tournament Team. Steve Ferdinandi (New Westminster, BC / New Westminster Secondary), Anthony Malcom (New Westminster, BC / St. Thomas More Collegiate) and Reese Robinson (New Westminster, BC / New Westminster Secondary) were all named to the U15 All-Tournament Team at attack where they were joined by U15 defenders Quinton Bradley (Richmond, BC / Matthew McNair Secondary) and Justin Goodwin (New Westminster, BC / New Westminster Secondary).
Making the U18 All-Tournament Team was attack Mike Kennedy (Surrey, BC / Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary), midfield Mack Davis (Port Coquitlam, BC / Riverside Secondary) and defender Kyle Robinson (New Westminster, BC / New Westminster Secondary). Robinson, a graduating high school senior, will play at Simon Fraser University in 2009.
LOOKING FORWARD
The Burnaby Mountain Selects U18 & U15 Elite summer rosters will wrap up their season at the Hobart College Team Camp in Geneva, NY August 2-3 where they will face elite varsity teams from Canada and the United States in front of some of the top college coaches in North America.
ABOUT BURNABY MOUNTIAN SELECTS
The Burnaby Mountain Selects Elite Development Program is entering its third season and is part of the Burnaby Mountain Lacrosse Association (BMLA). The program was founded in 2006 by Simon Fraser University men’s lacrosse Co-Head Coaches Brent Hoskins & Jeff Cathrea (5th season), and is designed to train players in a professional environment to best prepare them for a NCAA or MCLA collegiate field lacrosse career. Selection and consideration into the program is reserved for a select group of elite student-athletes, who possess the desire to work hard and learn in a competitive team environment, while demonstrating the ability to prioritize their academics goals in the highest regards. Players are currently enrolled in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 and reside in Greater Vancouver’s Lower Mainland. The Selects, proudly sponsored by Firstar Performance Apparel, Onyx Lacrosse / Riddell Helmets and Gait Lacrosse, travel to compete in top college recruiting tournaments throughout North America.
