DENVER, CO (June 17, 2008) – Coached by Simon Fraser University men’s lacrosse Co-Head Coaches Brent Hoskins & Jeff Cathrea, the Burnaby Mountain Selects U18 & U15 Summer Elite Teams traveled to Denver, Colorado to compete at the University of Denver Team Camp. The Selects combined to post an 8-4 (.750) record against some of the best high school aged competition in North America. The U18 Selects went 5-1 (.833) while the U15 Selects went 3-3 (.500) in front of approximately fifty college recruiters from top NCAA/MCLA institutions.
VERSUS OPPONENTS
The Burnaby Mountain Selects combined to outscore their opponents 98-73. The U18 Selects outscored their opponents 53-42 while the U15 Selects outscored their opponents 45-31. Both Burnaby Mountain teams competed in the Denver Team Camp U18 Elite High School Division consisting of 41 top high school aged teams from across the United States.
CANADIAN CONTENT
The U18 & U15 Burnaby Mountain Selects, based out of British Columbia, Canada were the only Canadian teams to compete at the 2008 Denver Team Camp. The 41 team tournament field featured teams from 12 different states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Texas, Utah, and Washington.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
The Burnaby Mountain Selects U15 Elite team was the youngest team entered in the 2008 Denver Team Camp U18 Division with all 16 players currently completing their freshman (grade 9) year of high school.
ALL-STAR HONORS
Fifty-two of the tournament’s top players were selected to play in an All-Star Game. The game took place on Saturday night after the professional MLL game between the Denver Outlaws and San Francisco Dragons at Invesco Field at Mile High, home of the NFL’s Denver Broncos. Two Burnaby Mountain players were selected to compete in the tournament’s showcase event: junior long pole Ryan Zoehner (Coquitlam, BC / Pinetree Secondary) and junior attack Mike Kennedy (Surrey, BC / Lord Tweedsmuir Senior Secondary).
HEAD OF THE CLASS
Hoskins & Cathrea place a great deal of emphasis on academics and their teams have become well known for excelling both in the classroom and on the field. In addition to one practice and a two hour clinic on Friday, and playing six games in two days Saturday and Sunday, the Selects also completed 3.5 hours of Study Hall over the course of the weekend in preparation for high school finals and provincial exams scheduled for when they return.
LOOKING FORWARD
Next up for the Burnaby Mountain Selects is the World Youth Lacrosse Invitational July 8-11 in Coquitlam, BC. This tournament is hosted by the Selects and the Burnaby Mountain Lacrosse Association and will coincide with the ILF U19 Men’s World Field Lacrosse Championship at Coquitlam’s Town Centre July 3-12. U18 & U15 Selects rosters, in addition to the rest of the Youth Tournament field will be announced shortly.
The Selects U18 & U15 Elite summer rosters will wrap up their season at the Hobart College Team Camp in Geneva, NY August 2-3.
ABOUT BURNABY MOUNTIAN SELECTS
The Burnaby Mountain Selects Elite Development Program is entering its third season and is part of the Burnaby Mountain Lacrosse Association (BMLA). The program was founded in 2006 by Simon Fraser University men’s lacrosse Co-Head Coaches Brent Hoskins & Jeff Cathrea (5th season), and is designed to train players in a professional environment to best prepare them for a NCAA or MCLA collegiate field lacrosse career. Selection and consideration into the program is reserved for a select group of elite student-athletes, who possess the desire to work hard and learn in a competitive team environment, while demonstrating the ability to prioritize their academics goals in the highest regards. Players are currently enrolled in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 and reside in Greater Vancouver’s Lower Mainland. The Selects, proudly sponsored by Firstar Performance Apparel, Onyx Lacrosse / Riddell Helmets and Gait Lacrosse, travel to compete in top college recruiting tournaments throughout North America.
