Casey Powell Breaks All-Time MLL Points Record
Rochester, NY (06/10/2008) – Rochester Rattler Casey Powell knows all about records. He practically rewrote the record books at Syracuse University before his younger brothers came along. Now he has one of the greatest records in the history of the eight-year outdoor league, Major League Lacrosse.
Powell reigns as the all-time points leader after recording two goals and one assist last Saturday in a 14-11 loss to the Washington Bayhawks. The points put him at 358, two ahead of the previous leader, Mark Millon. The record-breaking point came at 6:36 of the third quarter on a cross-crease assist to John Grant.
“It feels good,” Powell said to the Democrat and Chronicle newspaper. “I’ve been playing in the league for a long time and to be on top in points is a great feeling….”
“Congratulations to Casey on reaching this milestone,” said MLL Commissioner David Gross. “This is no small accomplishment, but it comes as no surprise to those who have followed his career as Casey has consistently been a top performer since he joined the League in 2001. I wish him continued success.”
Powell is in his eighth season and helped the league grow from six to 10 teams. He was a member of the MLL’s first championship team in 2001, while playing for the Long Island Lizards. He was later traded to Rochester in 2003. He ranks first in team history in assists (115), second points (237) and third in goals (120).
The Carthage, NY, native was a four-time All-American at Syracuse and the Division I Attackman of the Year in 1998. In addition, he was the Division I Most Outstanding Player in 1997 and 1998. Further, he was named to the NCAA Division I All-Tournament Team from 1995-98.
Casey set the school’s all-time points record (287), which was equaled by his brother Ryan in 2000. Their younger brother Mikey broke their record by amassing 307 points from 2001 to 2004.
