EUGENE, OR – Andrew Clough has been named head coach of the University of Oregon men’s lacrosse team for the remainder of the 2008 season and post-season, it was announced today. Clough, a native of McLean, Virginia, played midfielder for the Ducks for three seasons and has served as an assistant coach for the club while at Oregon.
Oregon, 11-4 on the season and 7-1 in Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League play, hosts defending MCLA Champion Brigham Young on Saturday, making Clough’s debut a challenging one. The match, the final one of the regular season for Oregon, will be held at Pape Field and begins at 1 p.m.
“I am excited to take on this role with the team for the rest of this season and look forward to helping the Ducks defend the PNCLL crown,” said Clough. “We’ve got a great group of guys and a lot of talent. As for the BYU game, we all know what to expect and the team is working hard to be at our very best on Saturday. I’m sure that both teams will put on a great performance for the fans.”
Clough is no stranger to Oregon lacrosse, having played for the squad under former coaches Josh Barbour and Joe Kerwin. He joined the team in 2004 and played for three full seasons. He was a starting midfielder for two seasons and was among the team leaders in goals and assists in 2006. His senior season was cut short by a knee injury. The Duck’s regular season records during Clough’s playing days of 2004 (13-6), 2005 (11-4), and 2006 (15-4) were all capped by championship performances in the PNCLL post-season tournament.
“It was my good fortune to have outstanding teammates and great coaching during my career at Oregon, and I will do everything I can to keep things moving in a positive direction for the program,” said Clough. “I am confident I can help the club on and off the field for the remainder of this season, and that is my goal.”
Clough (pronounced “Clow”) graduated from Oregon in 2007 with a double major in English and Business Administration and is employed full time by a Eugene-based technology company. He will serve as head coach on an interim basis, completing the spring 2008 season. The job will become open at the conclusion of the season. Clough replaces Ben Tiller, who coached the Ducks during the “Fall Ball” season of 2007 and through 15 games this spring. Because the coaching change is an internal personnel matter of the Oregon Lacrosse Club, no additional information is forthcoming.
Following the BYU match, Oregon travels to Missoula, Montana, for the PNCLL Final Four on May 3-4. The Ducks are the #2 seed in the tournament and will play at 3:00pm (Pacific Time) on Saturday, May 3rd against either Montana or Washington.
