Under the Helmet with Josh Schane
Get to Know Josh Schane
Name: Josh Schane
School: University of Oregon
Position: Attack
High School: Lake Oswego (OR)
Year: Senior
Major: Major in Geography, Minor in Japanese
Awards: Honorable Mention PNCLL All-Conference 2007, PNCLL Final Four MVP 2007
CollegeLAX: When/where did you first start playing lacrosse?
Josh Schane (JS): Freshmen year of High School
CollegeLAX: Who is/was your biggest lacrosse influence and why?
JS: I’d have to say my attack coach in high school Gavin (I don’t think I ever knew his last name). He played at Limestone College and really taught me everything I know. As simple as it sounds, “Go to goal” were three words that completely changed my game. Coach Joe Kerwin also did a lot for me when I came to school at Oregon, he probably knows the game better than anyone I know.
CollegeLAX: What is your current stick of choice?
JS: I’ve used the Warrior Evolution 2.0 for the last 2 years, I always tend to go back to Warrior heads and the Evo 2.0 is the most consistent stick I’ve played with, I string all my sticks and I can always get the perfect pocket in the Evo. I’m rockin an old-school Krypto-Pro as well.
CollegeLAX: What is favorite pre-game ritual?
JS: I like to wake up (usually I’m the last one out of bed) and eat a big breakfast. Sometime in between breakfast and warm-ups I chug an energy drink and then go to war with my bathroom.
CollegeLAX: What is your fondest lacrosse memory on the field?
JS: Living in the glory days, my favorite High School lacrosse memory was beating our cross-town rival Lakeridge my senior year at home. I scored three goals, and it was the first time in history we had ever beaten them. But the majority of my best lacrosse memories were from last season (2007) on the way to the Championship game. Beating CSU at home 19-6 was probably the best team win I have ever been a part of. But there really isn’t any memory that compares to the experience of playing in the Final Four and the National Championship Game at Pizza Hut Park last year. The Stadium was incredible, there’s nothing like playing on big games on a big stage.
CollegeLAX: Favorite part about playing MCLA lacrosse at your school?
JS: Our lacrosse team by far has the most fun out of any organization at Oregon. It’s one thing to go to a big University and join a frat and booze your life away, but playing lacrosse has truly made college an unforgettable experience. Being able to travel around the country and compete at a high level has brought us all closer together as a team and as friends, and I never really get tired of hanging out with my teammates. I live in a house with three other seniors on the team, and there’s never a dull moment. The social scene at U of O is incredible, and not only do people love coming to our games, but they love partying with us as well. Lacrosse players really know how to have a good time.
CollegeLAX: Do you have a lacrosse nickname? Explain.
JS: Not so much, I’m the only Josh on the team which is nice but most people just call me Josh Schane.
CollegeLAX: Aside from your own home field, what is your favorite MCLA school to play at or against?
JS: There really isn’t anywhere in the PNCLL that has a really great facility. The Idaho Vandals have the pleasure of playing on a field directly adjacent to a cow pasture, which made for some interesting aromas when the wind shifted. The coolest place I can remember playing at was the Oosterbaan Fieldhouse at the University of Michigan. Michigan has a pretty legit way of putting on their games, making it an event for the spectators and the “Final Countdown” makes for a pretty epic entrance.
CollegeLAX: Aside from your own team’s unis, what is your favorite MCLA uniform and why?
JS: I’ve always thought Chapman had a pretty sick setup, and I really like UCSB color scheme, they always put together a good uniform. Utah looks pretty good in all black this year.
CollegeLAX: What is on your iPod these days?
JS: I like to Rock. Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Atreyu, I love the Foo Fighters, Thrice, and I’m pretty into the new Angels & Airwaves and Jimmy Eat World CDs as well. I listen to some hip-hop too, The Game and T.I. and anything with T-Pain.
CollegeLAX: What is your favorite “guilty pleasure”?
JS: Sorority girls.
CollegeLAX: If you could have one superhero power, what would it be and why?
JS: It’d be pretty badass if I had claws like Wolverine, but I don’t see that being too practical. X-ray vision would come in handy for…seeing how many cookies are in the cookie jar.
CollegeLAX: What is your favorite Pro Sports Team or Pro Sports Player (non-lacrosse)?
JS: Tom Brady. Big-time baller. I’ll hand it to Eli though…the Super Bowl was pretty incredible.
CollegeLAX: What Hollywood Star would play you in a movie about your life?
JS: Tom Cruise…but only with a strong supporting cast. I’d also make sure Jared Leto and Keanu Reeves would come to the tryout too though.
CollegeLAX: What is your favorite (can’t miss) TV show at the moment?
JS: American Gladiators was a hit when it was on. It was a good one-two punch with Deal or No Deal. I still can’t believe no one won the million dollar mission.
CollegeLAX: What are your top three movies of all time?
JS: Jurassic Park, Donnie Darko, and Office Space
CollegeLAX: If you could only invite three people to your “Final Supper” – who would make the final table and why?
JS: It’d have to be my three roommates, Ben Kopca, Andrew Vincent, and Paul Swanson. We’re all seniors on the team and we live in the sweetest house in Eugene. 1625 forever.
CollegeLAX: If you could only take three items with you to that deserted island for the rest of your life, what items would they be?
JS: Well, I’d have to bring Megan Fox from Transformers, she’s so hot right now. And probably my lax stick and a weapon of some sort, probably a shotgun. A solar-powered Forman grill would come in pretty handy too.
CollegeLAX: Coke or Pepsi?
JS: Pepsi
CollegeLAX: What is your dream job?
JS: I’m a Geography major, and working for National Geographic would really be dope. Any job that would let me travel around the world sounds good to me.
CollegeLAX: Rank the three Jessica’s (Alba, Simpson, Biel) in preferred order.
JS: Simpson, Alba, Biel
CollegeLAX: Other than CollegeLAX, what are some of your must visit daily Favorite web sites?
JS: I spend a lot of time on Facebook…another guilty pleasure. But I tend to check InsideLacrosse.com and E-Lacrosse.com almost every day for lax news, pics, and videos.
