BOULDER, CO – University of Colorado men’s lacrosse Head Coach John Galvin has announced that four players have been selected to serve as team captains for the upcoming 2008 season. Senior midfielder Jack Kruszewski (New Trier/ Wilmette, IL), junior midfielder Mike Emerson (Park City/ Park City, UT), junior goaltender Kevin Moriarty (Seton Hall Prep/ Chatham, NJ) and junior defenseman Alex Mical (Menlo School/ Atherton, CA) were selected by the coaching staff.

“As for returning players, these were the best candidates for Captains,” commented Galvin. “They have seen the best of times and worst of times.” Referring to the 2006 National Championship Title loss to Colorado State University by a score of 8-7.
“I am particularly pleased with this group of Captains. They exhibit exactly the kinds of qualities that a coach hopes for: hard work, leadership, maturity, and a love of lacrosse,” added Assistant Coach Pete McGraw. “Their influence on the team has been evident since the start of the season. The team has been as coachable and disciplined as any that we have had, and I believe our Captains are largely responsible for that fact.”
Kruszewski enters his fourth season at CU and has been a key member of the Buffs’ midfield. Third in scoring for the Colorado midfield in 2007, Jack was a member of the Chicago Machine developmental team, during the off-season.
Emerson, a 2-time all-state midfielder, has developed into the future of CU’s midfield. He tells us that we can expect a “continuation of quality play and a strong performance at the National tournament” in 2008.
“Mike and Jack will have good competition pushing them in practice and they are going to have to be working on and off the field to keep up with the younger talent on this team,” Galvin commented.
Moriarty enters his second campaign as the #1 goaltender for the Buffs in 2008. In 17 games as a sophomore, he finished 2007 with a .632 save percentage, leading a defense that allowed just-under 7 goals per game. “Kevin has big game experience and hopefully he can (once again) take command of a solid defensive group.”
Mical, entering his 3rd season with Colorado, expects to great things from his team. “We have a good, young, fast team this year. Our sights are set on a league and national championship. To aim for anything less would be a disservice to myself, and my teammates.”
Coach Galvin shed some light on the junior defender with a new assignment, “Alex is switching from Long-Stick-Midfield to Close-defense and has proven in practice that he can handle this change. He still has some raw talent that we can work with.”
“Each player is unique in their own way, however they have developed a certain characteristic; Esprit de Corp.” Galvin added, “This is a sense of belonging to a special group and the overall care and accountability that they all carry and share with the rest of the team.”
The University of Colorado will play host to their first MCLA Division I opponent, Texas, on March 8th. With a much-anticipated scrimmage against Division III Colorado College, scheduled for February 20th, as the pre-cursor of an exciting 2008 spring season.
