A tough out-of-conference schedule and road trips to Colorado, California, and Canada highlight the 2008 Oregon Ducks lacrosse schedule, which was released this week. The non-conference games include a rematch of the 2007 MCLA National Championship Game when Brigham Young travels to Eugene in late April. The Ducks, winners of four consecutive Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League championships, also face a tough series of conference match ups including away games against Simon Fraser and Washington.
“Winning the conference and returning to nationals is the focus,” said first-year Head Coach Ben Tiller. “Playing in the national championship game last year (a 16-9 loss) left a bitter taste. We want another shot at that title, but winning the PNCLL is the first priority.”
The Ducks open the season at home on Saturday, February 9, against Oregon State. Washington State, Idaho, and Chico State travel to Eugene in February as well. San Diego, Montana, Gonzaga and Boise State come to Eugene in March, giving Oregon eight straight home games to start the 2008 season.
At the end of their long homestretch Oregon will set flight for Colorado. The Ducks will spend spring break battling perennial MCLA powers Colorado and Colorado State, and also face a strong Division II squad, Northern Colorado.
The Ducks wrap up their PNCLL schedule with a weekend road trip to British Columbia to face conference rival Simon Fraser, and to Seattle to take on the Washington Huskies.
Three out-of-conference matches will conclude the season for Oregon. The team plays in Berkeley, Calif., against the Cal Bears on Saturday, April 12, and goes to Rohnert Park the next day to face the Sonoma State Seawolves. Finally, capping off regular season play will be the rematch of the 2007 National Championship game with BYU. The match with the Cougars is set for Saturday, April 26.
“Our schedule is ambitious and puts us on the field against some of the best teams in the country,” said Tiller. “Our team coordinators did a stellar job putting this schedule together for us. Opening with a long series of home games is somewhat of an advantage, but we will have our challenges all season long.”
The PNCLL has scheduled its conference tournament for May 4 and 5 in Missoula, Montana. The top four teams from PNCLL Division 1 and the top four from Division 2 will travel there to vie for the top spot in their respective division and solidify a trip to Nationals in Dallas, Texas, May 13-17.
